Hello, my name is Jack Cunningham senior at FGCU currently taking univeristy colloquium. I am a construction management major looking to go into project management for Pulte homes. My understandings of colloquium before taking this class were that: it was required by the school, you went on field trips, and learned about nature and environmental stuff. Now two weeks into the course those preconceptions are mostly true, but a very basic description of the course. For example, I thought colloquium was just an FGCU class, but it turns out every school has their own version of it, ours being focused on the environment. And I will be honest I thought the class was a cash grab from the school; for me I've taken sustainable approach to construction which I thought would fill that gap of protecting the environment through my majror. But I'm starting to understand the value of taking it, this is the only class with students from other majors all coming together discussing how we impact our environment, and how we can help take care of it.
I think the value of learning other majors perspective on the environment will be helpful for myself and learing about how every field of work has some ripple on the world. In the first assignemtn we all did I talked about how construction does create a lot waste from materials and scraps. But also mentioned how concepts like green energy are unsustainable. Like electric cars, great no fuel emmisions, except for the charging stations that power those cars burn fossil fuels and are a mute point. Not to mention the lithium and other precious metals required for the batteries will wear out over time and need to be thrown out after 20-30 years. Or wind turbines, the installation of them bruns gallons of fuel to erect them in undeveloped fields, pour the concrete to hold them in place, not to mention the blades have to be replaced and we don't have a recyling solution to them yet. Now understand I believe being sustainable and limiting waste important to our world, I don't want to live in a third world county with garbage and smog air, but I think it's a huge cash sink that isn't paying off nearly as much as it should be.
